How to Journal SPX Bull Put Spreads (Without Spreadsheet Chaos)
A practical logging workflow for SPX bull-put verticals: strikes, credit, rolls, closes, and review fields that make post-trade stats trustworthy.
Bull-put verticals on SPX look simple on entry: sell OTM put spread, collect credit, manage or expire. The complexity stacks when you run a ladder — multiple expiries, rolls, partial closes, and size changes tied to the same directional bias. A journal that only records net P&L misses the decisions that actually drive expectancy.
Minimum fields for every bull-put log
- Trade date and entry time (RTH vs overnight context).
- Strikes, width, contracts, credit collected, DTE at entry.
- Regime or indicator tag at entry (optional but powerful in review).
- Exit: close credit, roll link, assignment, or expire.
- Notes: why you sized up/down vs prior rung on the ladder.
Separate open lifecycle from closed stats
Open spreads distort win rate if you count them as wins before max profit. Log status explicitly: open, closed, rolled, expired, assigned. ALRE™ rolls performance into win rate, R-multiples, and expectancy only when closes are recorded — so headline stats match realized outcomes.
CSV import vs manual logging
If your broker exports fills, import when you can and reconcile against hand-logged spreads. When imports are messy, manual logging on the same schema beats skipping trades. OrisTrade accepts CSV from common brokers and keeps one timeline per ladder in the ALRE cockpit.
Weekly review ritual (20 minutes)
- Sort closed bull-puts by largest loser — note book load at entry.
- Check whether losers violated zone appetite or stop multiples.
- Compare credit collected vs width — are you underpricing tail risk?
- One process fix for next week; not ten new rules.
